Shifting Light In Late Summer.

Hello there friends,

I often think there's always a sense of anticipation during our seasons in Britain. If you are observant you can notice changes within the natural cycle every couple of weeks or even less.

Late summer has a specific kind of mood don't you find? and towards the end of August the light starts to feel different though it’s hard to explain what’s shifting.

This year the heatwaves, drought and even the eclipse have contributed to an impression of unreality and a sense of something waiting to happen. Do you feel that now? I'm wondering if this summer of hot, dry conditions will hasten the onset of Autumn colour changes.

Here in Hebden Bridge the rain has well and truly set in, the skies are frequently grey now and the temperatures have plunged, all within a week. It certainly keeps you guessing, especially about what clothes to wear each day.

I'd love to hear what you think. I've come to realise that stuff I write in these emails mostly just disappears and truthfully I'd like it to have a bit more longevity.

My website is the only place online where I kind of own the property/where I am sort of in charge. In other words, where I am not totally at the mercy of the whims of the ... I won't say 'the algorithms' because those are merely the tools of the social media magnates who actually make the decisions but palm-off the blame to 'the algorithm' which is pure obfuscation.

A Hole In The Wall

When I first saw this from a distance I thought someone had drilled a hole in the wall and the pale was fresh stone dust.

But getting closer I could see it was a sheet of web, with a perfectly circular funnel leading back into the wall.

We noticed there was a whole village of these web holes along the wall and wondered what creatures could be responsible.

They aren't actually circular holes in the wall but web circles formed in the cracks between stones

You can be reassured that the structures belong to a species of harmless funnel weaver spider unconnected to the madly venomous funnel web spiders of Australia.

Bringing The Outside In

I know I’ve included Sycamore keys in this spot previously, unripe ones hanging in clusters with a strong pinkish tinge, and some very green ones blown off the tree.

But until now I had never noticed such a perfect bunch of skeleton keys! They remind me of insect wings, maybe Dragonflies.

Their shadows are especially beautiful. There's something kind of magical about the faint shadow of a skeleton - an absence of an absence maybe?

Cormorant Update

A few days ago, driving along the road between Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd we noticed that there are now four Cormorants! Each one defending its spot on top of the flat lamps of four tall street lights directly above all the traffic.

Ripples
