Bringing The Outside In.
Hello and welcome!
Apologies for sending a duff link in my previous mailing. All because of missing off the little accent on the e in giclée print in the link text. Paying attention to detail is always best!
Remember those lovely lichen encrusted twigs from last month's Bringing The Outside In? Well this time the focus is on moss. There's an abundance of it here in this damp valley filled with the sound of rushing water.
Moss adorns the grit stone walls, bringing welcome green to the winter landscape and is so pretty when it sparkles in the morning sunlight following rain.
Our recent storm wreaked the usual havoc and even brought down some big old trees. I found this perfect little green moss cushion on the path. Not wanting to leave it to be stomped into the mud I've taken it home and adopted it.
I expect you've probably heard of moss gardens? Well I've decided to try making a very mini one to make my 'pet' feel comfortable, maybe in a saucer or small bowl. The Japanese have elevated growing moss to an an exquisite art form. I on the other hand have only my enthusiasm and some tips I've found online. I'll let you know how I get on.
If anyone feels like joining-in or already has a thriving example, I'd love to hear your thoughts about it.

Flow - A Book About Rivers
“There are rivers in the sky, and they are vast” so begins Amy-Jane Beer’s book The Flow about rivers, water and wildness, which won the Wainwright prize in 2023.
if you enjoy reading about nature and our place within it, I can thoroughly recommend this erudite yet conversational exploration of water through landscape and story.
I couldn’t help noticing how my two ceramic pots perfectly compliment the paperback cover! The illustration is by Nick Hayes who is also the author of The Book Of Trespass another fine work detailing our lack of access to 92 per cent of the land and 97 per cent of the waterways in Britain. No wonder people feel disconnected from the great outdoors.
The vases are by Keith Murray for Wedgwood.
Do you have a river, stream or brook near your home? What is its history? Do you know where the source is and where it runs out to sea or joins a bigger river? Finding the answers to these questions can enrich your enjoyment and increase your sense of belonging. The tiniest trickle has a story to tell you if only you look.

Hebden Water
My nearest river , Hebden Water, is a tributary of the River Calder with the confluence in the centre of Hebden Bridge. Currently it still looks incredibly wintery yet there’s a peaceful beauty in its austere monochrome twigginess. Soon though everything will be transformed by the unfurling of the green.
And this is my oil painting of the Calder in winter. I was planning to exhibit the work in a group show at Hebden Bridge town hall in January but owing to the closure of the only main road through our valley, the picture framer was unable to complete the job until it was too late. Which means that if you’re looking for a lovely small oil painting for your interior ‘Restful Days On The River Calder’ is available to purchase.
I really like the serene mood created by the artwork on this dark green wall but it also looks fine with white or pale interiors. Oil paint on paper laid on linen canvas. Dimensions including the narrow wooden frame are 33 x 33 cm. £275 plus £12 insurance and postage by Royal Mail Special Delivery. UK only.
This is not on my website shop yet so if you are interested in buying or finding out more, email me on angie@angierogers.com
