Get Inspired - Borrowed Light

Hello from Upper Calderdale where the land tumbles down from the moors, through the woods to the waterways below.

This is Borrowed Light, a recent charcoal drawing I’ve chosen to represent my work in the Hebden Bridge Open Studios brochure. It will be getting its first public showing on my studio wall this coming weekend.

I am happy with how this work has turned out. I think it conveys what I want you to notice - the way water in a deep valley borrows light from the sky and gleams it out through the shade, like a mirror on a dark wall. West of Hebden Bridge the Rochdale canal curves between steep wooded slopes full of mysterious shadow.
I love these huge contrasts.

Have you ever wondered what Artists’ studios are like? Or what goes on now in those old Hebden Bridge mills? (the few that haven’t been converted into apartments). This is your chance to find out. Over 90 artists are taking part including me and I’d love to see you. Join me in my studio at Linden Mill in Linden Road, Hebden Bridge HX7 7DP.

Bringing the outside in

These are Alder cones - not big and showy like some Pine cones but attractive in their own way with an intricate structure and a pleasing colour.

You can make amber and dark brown ink from Alder cones I was delighted to learn. I’ve gathered some from our local wood and plan to make a batch as soon as Open Studios is all over; it’s such a busy time.

I will show you all about the process and resulting ink in the next instalment of Get Inspired.

The web of life in June

You can notice all sorts of details in Nature you haven’t previously paid attention to whilst on a walk and here in the South Pennines, June is a great time of year with an almost infinite source of inspiration and interest all around. These are a few of the things that caught my eye.

Purple clover and buttercup flowers
Pink hued sycamore keys
Lime green fern fronds
Cotton grass on the moor
Alder cones on the tree

I’d be glad to hear about any special details in the natural world you were inspired by recently.

New posts

Don’t forget to visit my website, I’ve made two new blog posts, one an extended version about art tools from natural materials and the other called Purple Rain about ephemeral beauty and Rhododendrons.

There are some new posts on my Instagram account too, including a short video showing the weird and wonderful spiralling of a hillside fresh water spring.

I usually send out Get Inspired on a Sunday morning every 4 weeks or so. This mail out will arrive on a different day as I am in the process of moving from Wix to Convertkit (soon to be renamed Kit).

Becoming familiar with the new way of doing things has taken me a little longer than originally expected although I am now getting there! So if you notice anything not quite right about the email you receive, please do let me know so I can sort it out.

In the meantime I hope you get to enjoy some time out in Nature and plenty of fresh air.
