Contrary Weather

Hello there,

What a strange May it has been this year! Less than a fortnight ago it was frosty mornings, a horrible chill wind requiring the central heating on and warming soups. Yet now it is sweltering sun, a house like an oven, and salad every day.

This one was taken on 19th May and shows a favourite view as you approach the town from the west along the tow path. The next time I walked along here it was dazzling heat under a blue sky and too hot to take photographs!

Bringing The Outside In

Have you ever noticed how beautiful immature Pinecones are?

There is a big tree I know that overhangs the canal and is often cut back so I don’t feel bad about taking a spray to enjoy at home.

Beware though, the resinous sap is very sticky. That’s how I found out this small glass vase I bought isn’t green glass at all but clear with a transparent green coating which rubbed off all blotchy when I tried to remove the resin - what a con!

Sand Martins Find A Way

The ingenuity and adaptability of wild creatures in the face of human interference is always heartening.

Whilst strolling round nearby Leeming Reservoir I noticed a lot of what I first thought were swallows zipping around the concrete reservoir outfall.

Looking more closely I realised they were Sand Martins which have made nests in the small drainage pipes within the brutal-looking structure. How amazing.

Normally they nest in holes they excavate in the soft banks of rivers, and I’ve also seen artificial banks created specifically for them in wetland nature reserves.

Sorry about the rubbish photo of the Sand Martin, it was a distance away from the dam, they are such fast flyers and I only had my phone camera.

It was a bit like the Fish Doorbell I told you about in a previousl email, I waited ages for a Sand Martin to fly in or out of the hole I had focused on and then only a split second to react!

You get the idea though and maybe helps give you some hope for the resilient spirit of Nature on this despoiled planet.
