Azure To Ultramarine

Hello there friends,

There are so many names for artists' blue paint and each one a different hue. I can’t read music and find foreign language learning difficult but I do know colour.

In my minds eye I can picture the difference between cerulean, ultramarine and indigo, cobalt, cyan and Prussian blue. And all these pigments have historical, scientific and cultural associations that enrich the resonance of their colour.

On a glorious clear summer day do you ever marvel at the blueness of the sky? Knowing that beyond its atmosphere our planet is surrounded by the blackness of space?

I find it strange that all the while I am accepting and even welcoming the restful darkness of night, the thought of a black sky in daytime is terrifying and unbearable.

The Hogweed in Calderdale has grown so tall this year, it’s easy to photograph the beautiful constellations of pale flowers from underneath to contrast against a cobalt blue sky. This wild herb is an innocent cousin of the toxic Giant Hogweed.

Hebden Bridge Open Studios July 2026

Hebden Bridge Open Studios has now been and gone! So long in the preparation and then over in a flash.

We had a lot of lovely visitors to Linden Mill and my two little studios were often quite crowded. It was especially delightful to meet in real life some followers of Get Inspired. Thank you for coming.

I was too busy to take any photos except this one during a lull and am pleased with how it turned out. I’m grateful to the kind man who agreed to be photographed. I love how his clothing coordinates so well with my artworks, in colour and subject.

Bringing The Outside In

This is not something tangible you can bring home because it involves ‘different manifestations of electromagnetic waves’ or in other words light and shade.So capture it in a photograph or even better a short video because movement magnifies the effect.

What I’m talking about is the softly glowing patterns made by the shadows of gently wafting leaves on a path or track under trees. I think these ones are particularly beautiful.

Entangled Light

Do you have a favourite walk that passes through woodland? I hope so. The quality of light in there seems special to me. Most days I walk through Lee Wood. I know I mention it in these emails quite often, it gives me so much, a dependable arboreal friend.

A natural development then to make art about it. So many people seem to love tree tunnels and I’m no exception.You can get that effect in places in Lee Wood, although I’ve exaggerated the contrast in my recent drawing.

I have made charcoal from twigs foraged in Lee Wood and ochre pigment from earth collected from the pathway in there. Both were used in the making of this image.

This one got its first public airing at Open Studios and attracted a lot of positive comment. People get quite passionate about ‘their’ green tunnel.
